Lori Vallow Daybell has become infamous as the “doomsday mom” following a tri-murder case. She’s been called a “monster” and a “cult mom”. Daybell was found guilty in the disappearance and death of her children and her husband’s ex-wife. The prosecutors said Lori Vallow Daybell craved “money, power and sex”. However, her two kids were “obstacles” to her desires. Therefore, she killed them.
The so-called “Doomsday Mom” appeared sad as she appeared in an Idaho court for the opening statements of her murder trial. Lori Vallow Daybell carried out the murder, and her husband was also found involved in it. Vallow Daybell, along with her husband Chad Daybell, was sentenced to life without parole. It was after an Idaho jury found her guilty in May on all charges for her role in the deaths of her 16-year-old daughter, Tylee Ryan. She even killed her 7-year-old adopted son, Joshua “JJ” Vallow, and her husband’s first wife, Tammy Daybell. She had pleaded not guilty.
The couple then collected social security benefits and life insurance money related to the three deaths. The pair had espoused doomsday-themed beliefs involving the existence of “zombies” and contact with other realms and further used their religious ideologies to justify their alleged crimes, authorities said.
Vallow Daybell was found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy charges in May. The jury agreed with prosecutors who said she wanted to eliminate her youngest children as part of a plan to embark on a new life with Chad Daybell, as well as conspiring to murder Daybell’s then-wife, Tammy Daybell.
The children were “burned, mutilated and dismembered, and buried like animals,” as the judge read. The scene was horrific, Boyce said, adding that images of the children’s bodies will haunt law enforcement, jurors and him. He said he saw no sign that Vallow Daybell felt any remorse.
For the first time in the trial, Vallow Daybell explained her actions. She was speaking in court for roughly 8 1/2 minutes. But she insisted she was not guilty of murder. Lori said her victims have visited her in spiritual form and are happy in the afterlife.
The lengthy trial was full of strange and shocking moments. Prosecutors say Vallow Daybell was motivated by arcane religious beliefs about “dark energy” and the “end times,” as well as by her desire to pursue a life with Chad Daybell — which included conspiring to kill his now-deceased wife.
Boyce handed down his sentence after hearing five victim-impact statements. These were from relatives of Tylee and JJ, the children whose bodies were found in 2020. The statement came from relatives of Tammy Daybell, Chad Daybell’s previous wife. He also faces charges in all three deaths.
Bonneville County Public Defender John Thomas is one of Vallow Daybell’s attorneys. He urged Boyce to impose a 20-year fixed term on his client with an “indeterminate” life sentence. He demanded her prison terms be set to run concurrently.
Prosecutor Rob Wood asked for the maximum sentence to be several fixed life terms without possible parole. He demanded this, saying Vallow Daybell had horrifically betrayed her children’s trust. In the end, Lori Daybell was asked if she was satisfied with the representation she received in court. She said she was.
