Bo Cruz, a fictional basketball prodigy at the heart of Netflix’s latest sports drama “Hustle,” is portrayed by none other than NBA player Juancho Hernangomez. The film, released on June 8, weaves the tale of Stanley Sugerman (Adam Sandler), a Philadelphia 76ers scout, and his journey to guide Cruz through the hurdles of the NBA draft.
While Bo Cruz is a product of writers Taylor Materne and Will Fetters’ imagination, his on-court prowess is delivered authentically by Juancho Hernangomez, currently signed with the Toronto Raptors. Unlike many sports dramas, “Hustle” doesn’t draw inspiration from real-life events, but rather showcases the challenges faced by an aspiring NBA player from Spain.
A Basketball Journey Translated to the Big Screen
In a pickup game discovery reminiscent of cinematic storytelling, Stanley Sugerman finds the talented Cruz during his overseas talent hunt. The character, portrayed by Hernangomez, faced a turbulent journey filled with teenage dreams, unexpected fatherhood, and heated rivalries, notably against Kermit Wilts (Anthony Edwards). Despite setbacks, Cruz’s resilience shines through, culminating in a triumphant moment where Sugerman becomes an assistant coach for the 76ers, while Cruz joins the Boston Celtics.
Hernangomez’s venture into acting wasn’t planned but rather a product of pandemic-induced boredom. In a surprising move, the NBA player sent an audition tape and navigated a three-month casting process, securing his role as Bo Cruz. Speaking about the unexpected turn, Hernangomez expressed, “I have never expected to be in a movie. I never dreamt to be an actor.”
Detailing the casting process, Hernangomez disclosed his audition tape was sent during the COVID-19 pandemic when he found himself with time on his hands. While “Hustle” marks his acting debut, the NBA star currently has no future acting projects lined up, emphasizing his focus on his basketball career. As of now, he continues to contribute to the Toronto Raptors after a one-year deal and a triumphant EuroBasket tournament with Spain.
In a unique blend of reality and fiction, “Hustle” not only brings a compelling sports drama but also introduces audiences to the unexpected acting talents of NBA player Juancho Hernangomez.
