According to the publishers of the Oxford English Dictionary, the word of the year for 2023 is “rizz.” It prevailed over contenders like Swiftie, situationship, and de-influencing to secure the prestigious title. The Oxford University Press, in announcing the winner, stated that the competition honours recently coined words or expressions that represent a particular era and possess the potential for lasting cultural significance. It aims to capture a snapshot of social history through these language innovations.
According to Oxford’s definition, “rizz” is a noun denoting style, charm, attractiveness, or the capacity to allure a romantic or sexual partner. Oxford clarified that “rizz” is a shortened form of the word charisma.
Additionally, the term can function as a verb, particularly in the expression “rizz up,” signifying the act of attracting, seducing, or engaging in conversation with a person, as per Oxford’s explanation.
The term “rizz” gained widespread popularity on TikTok and various platforms following its adoption by influencer Kai Cenat on Twitch. Cenat, with over 8 million followers, engages his audience through livestreams featuring video games, conversations with celebrities, pranks on friends, and casual interactions.
Cenat’s discussions also touch on approaching women, introducing the concept of “rizz.” According to the 21-year-old Bronx native, “Rizz” originated among him and his friends. During an interview on the No Jumper podcast, Cenat officially defined it as a situation where a woman transitions from disinterest to intrigue.
Oxford Languages President Casper Grathwohl told the BBC that “rizz” reflects the prevailing mood of 2023, signifying increased openness and confidence after challenging times. The term also highlights the integration of internet culture words into everyday language.
While “authentic” was Merriam-Webster’s word of the year, “rizz” was considered. Collins Dictionary chose “artificial intelligence” as their word of the year in November. In 2022, Oxford’s word of the year was “Goblin mode,” describing unapologetic self-indulgence that rejects social norms.
