Tips for Choosing a Weighted Blanket

If you’re in the market for a weighted blanket to help you sleep better, alleviate anxiety, or just because you like the feel of pressure on your skin from head to toe, you’ll want to know how to select the right product for you. From materials to weight, the type of weighted blanket you get will determine the benefits you get. You’ll also want to buy your weighted blanket from a top-tier company like Yogibo to make sure it’s high-quality and backed by superior technology. Here are three other tips for choosing a weighted blanket.

Picking the Right Weight

You can find weighted blankets for an individual ranging from three pounds to 30 pounds. Of course, you can find heavier blankets for couples, but 30 pounds per person is the maximum weight that’s considered safe to sleep under. Most people, though, definitely do not need a 30-pound blanket. The rule of thumb is to choose one that is approximately 10% of your body weight. So, if you weigh 150 pounds, you would want a 15-pound blanket.

Keep in mind, however, that some people prefer a heavier blanket than 10% of their body weight. Usually, you might start with one that meets the 10% guidelines, but decide that a slightly heavier one provides more comfort and calming effects than the lighter one. In fact, if your weight doesn’t directly correspond with a blanket weight, it’s recommended that you choose the weight that is just above what would be 10% of your body weight. For example, if you weigh 180 pounds, a 20-pound blanket will probably be better for you than a 15-pound blanket.

Picking the Right Materials

Weighted blankets are made out of all types of materials, from cotton to flannel, to fleece. But, keep in mind that you’ll want a material that is soft to the touch, durable, and washable. A cotton-spandex blend is the ideal material for a weighted blanket because it’s velvety soft, but also extremely durable. Yogibo’s full-length weighted blanket is also antimicrobial, which means it’s healthier than other options as well. This material is washable in cold water, so you never have to worry about spills or stains either.

Picking the Right Filler

Of course, something has to be inside the blanket that’s giving it its weight. The filler in the blanket makes a big difference in the quality of the blanket. Glass microbeads, steel microbeads, polystyrene microbeads, sand, and even beans have been used to fill blankets to give them their weight. Glass microbeads, like those in the Yogibo full-length weighted blanket, are the filler of choice for higher-end blankets.

Not only are they environmentally friendly, but because fewer of them are required to reach a desired weight than other fillers, the blanket will be smoother and less bulky. In fact, blankets filled with glass microbeads look just like regular blankets, but offer all the benefits of their weighted siblings.

Conclusion

Choosing a weighted blanket is not a decision that should be taken lightly (no pun intended). The right weight, materials, and filler are necessary to ensure you get a blanket that will provide you with all the available benefits. Carefully consider your options before buying one to get the proper fit.
