Confidence is a very essential element in our lives. In fact, it is one of the main determiners of a successful and happy life. We may define confidence as one’s belief in the accuracy of one’s own knowledge and skills. It is a belief that one can get past any challenge that might come up one’s way. Therefore, it is essential to have a proper level of confidence in every situation we face. In fact, a lack of confidence might lead you away from taking on challenges.
However, being over-confident is also never recommended. In fact, overconfidence might push you toward dangers and risks. Similarly, being under-confident also might land you in trouble. If you lack confidence in doing something and delay your actions, then later you might find that the opportunity has gone past you. Therefore, it is very necessary to have a balanced level of confidence.
Read the article to know about the three things that will help you to build confidence.
1. Analysing Reasons for Turning Down Opportunities
Being under-confident generally triggers an automated response on our part. It is to turn down any opportunity that might come our way. In fact, in such a state, whenever we come to know of any opportunity, we prefer not to think about it. Therefore, we try to avoid it.
However, it is important not to accept this response. Rather we have to think reasonably. We need to think about the opportunity. This might make one nervous. However, this must not stop one from contemplating the opportunity. This is the first step towards building confidence and saying ‘yes’ to opportunities. However, thinking about the opportunity might again lead you to think of the reasons to prove yourself unworthy of the opportunity. This again needs to be overcome.
The best way to do this is to pretend that one of your friends has told you that he will be quitting an opportunity due to the reasons that you have listed down. Then try to consider what advice you would have given that friend. In fact, in doing this, you will find that on most occasions you would encourage that friend in taking up the opportunity. Therefore, turn this encouragement to yourself and build confidence.
2. Considering The Alternatives
Most times when we decline to take something on, we consider our weaknesses and limitations. We tend to think that someone else would do that job better than us.
However, we have to change this way of thinking. Instead, one must consider that the job at hand needs to be done and ultimately someone will do it. Then we need to consider who will do the job if we do not. Moreover, we need to consider whether that alternative person will be more qualified than us. Thinking in this way, we might end up realising that the alternative will not be a more worthy option. This will again help you build confidence.
3. The Training Wheel Technique
When being under-confident we tend to think that something is out of our capabilities, we should not stop at that. Rather, we might ask a friend, colleague or mentor to guide us in a work that will give us an experience of working beyond our level of expertise.
This is almost similar to how we use training wheels to learn cycling. We use the training wheels, we do not stand any chance of getting hurt. Similarly, working in the above fashion would keep us out of harm’s way and would make us gain something out of it. What we will gain is the confidence to work beyond our capabilities.
