Meta has taken a proactive step to combat misinformation by extending its fact-checking initiative to Threads, its dedicated messaging platform. Set to launch early next year, this move aims to identify and counter false information on Threads through third-party partnerships that review and assess content. The decision is particularly timely as the 2024 US presidential election looms on the horizon.
Presently, when a fact-checker labels content as false on Facebook or Instagram, a corresponding fact-check rating is applied to similar content on Threads. However, this extension will empower fact-checkers to independently assess and rate content specifically on the Threads platform.
Meta recently introduced user controls that allow individuals in the US to customize their exposure to sensitive or fact-checked content on Facebook and Instagram. These controls will be replicated on Threads, granting users the ability to determine the default level of demotions on fact-checked content in their Feed.
In Meta’s ongoing efforts to combat the spread of misinformation and hate speech, this step signifies a commitment to providing users with a more reliable and secure online environment. The move is part of Meta’s broader strategy to address criticism related to the proliferation of false information on its platforms during significant events such as the 2016 and 2020 US presidential elections.
Threads, while not positioned as a primary space for news and current affairs, has been subject to Meta’s ongoing improvements in content moderation. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, emphasized that while politics and hard news naturally surface on Threads, the platform doesn’t actively encourage these topics.
As Meta aligns its platforms to combat misinformation and enhance user control, the extension of fact-checking measures to Threads signifies a comprehensive approach to maintaining a trustworthy online ecosystem.
