The cause of death for the Brazilian fan who passed out during Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert in Rio de Janeiro has been determined as heat exhaustion, according to a forensics report obtained by the Associated Press. Ana Clara Benevides Machado, who fell ill during the performance at Nilton Santos Stadium, was pronounced dead at Salgado Filho Hospital on Nov. 17.
The forensics report concludes that Machado suffered cardiorespiratory arrest due to heat exposure, with no preexisting conditions or substance use contributing to her death. The high temperature in Rio that day was reported to be 105 degrees. Videos and photos on social media showed fans lined up for hours before entering the venue.
Swift, expressing devastation on her Instagram Stories after the incident, postponed the following night’s show due to the sweltering conditions. She stated, “I can’t even tell you how devastated I am by this. There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young.”
The singer added that she would be unable to speak about the tragedy on stage due to overwhelming grief. Swift honored Machado during subsequent shows, and the Eras Tour organizers announced plans to distribute free water at future events in Rio, addressing concerns that fans were not allowed to bring their own water bottles into the venue on the day of the incident.
Following the forensics report, Swift has not commented publicly on the findings. Machado’s family attended Swift’s Nov. 26 show in Rio, and the singer met with them privately.
The tragic event prompted event organizers to enhance safety measures, including the distribution of free water, multiple medical stations, and mobile ICUs around the stadium. The Eras Tour continued, but the incident underscored the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of fans, performers, and crew.
