Rasheeda Williams, who played transgender woman Koko Da Doll in the Sundance smash hit Kokomo City, has been identified as the 17-year-old arrested in her death.
The suspect turned himself into police on April 26 and identified himself as a “person of interest,” according to an Atlanta Police Department statement. When the suspect turned himself in, he was “transported to the Fulton County jail and taken into custody without incident”.
According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the suspect confirmed to police that he was the same person depicted in previously released APD surveillance images. Also, the suspect denied shooting anyone, according to the arrest warrant obtained by The AJC; however, his admission to being present at the scene of the crime, along with surveillance evidence, led to the warrant’s approval.
According to police, the video shows a man in a white hoodie arguing with Williams before firing a gun and fleeing.
She Died Before Reaching the Hospital
Williams was reportedly conscious and breathing when two women discovered her. Williams, 35, was one of four prominent Black trans women in Kokomo City. Dominique Silver, Liyah Mitchell, and Daniella Carter were the others. Moreover, the film follows the women in their daily lives in New York and Atlanta, documenting “their love/hate relationships with cis men, their relationships to their own beauty, and the full array of attitudes that confront their lives on a daily basis”.
“I call her Koko the code,” Kokomo City director D. Smith said after Williams’ death. She acts as a connector, bringing people together. “I want people to see her in her truest form, speaking so openly and candidly about her life and her goals,” Smith said. Also, it was an honour to have known her.
