Sunny Balwani Assets

Sunny Balwani has more than ten fancy cars. He recently got a new BMW X9 for $150,000 and owns a Porsche Macan worth over $160,000. He also has a Bugatti Chiron, a Lamborghini Huracan, and a McLaren GT. Sunny Balwani lives in a big house in California that he bought for $16 million.

He used money from Theranos to buy it, which is now being looked into. Also, he is one of the richest frauds in the entire world. Let us see what happens to him now. Maybe the court will snatch his earnings and give him to the public.

Sunny Balwani Career

During the 1990s, Balwani worked at Lotus Software and Microsoft, where he was involved in sales and coding. He met his future wife, Keiko Fujimoto, at Microsoft. Also, he later became the President of CommerceBid.com, a company helping businesses buy and sell items online through auctions.

Furthermore, the company was acquired by Commerce One, and Balwani joined its board. Moreover, he sold his shares in Commerce One in 2000, earning around $40 million. He then pursued an MBA at the University of California, Berkeley, and spent time in a computer science program at Stanford University but left in 2008.

Theranos

Balwani joined Theranos in 2009 and became its president, overseeing daily operations. He didn’t have a background in medical sciences or devices. Furthermore, this was a problem as there were no medical experts on the company’s board. Also, former employees described him as controlling and paranoid about spying.

He sometimes used technical words incorrectly, trying to seem knowledgeable. Moreover, he even compared Theranos’ device to the discovery of antibiotics. Balwani made mistakes, like confusing technical terms. He was unaware when a prank was played on him in a presentation.

In 2015, The Wall Street Journal said Theranos’ Edison blood test device gave wrong results. Edison machines often failed checks and had inconsistent results.

Furthermore, this was confirmed by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2016. In April 2016, Theranos told regulators it canceled 2014 and 2015 Edison test results and some others. CMS warned Theranos in January 2016 after checking its lab.

Also, they suggested a 2-year ban on Balwani running a lab due to issues at the California lab. Moreover, Theranos was also charged with fraud for false claims about the technology’s use by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Legal Proceedings

Sunny Balwani Career

In 2018, the court accused both Balwani and Holmes of lying to investors and fraudulently getting over $700 million for their company. They made false statements about the business and its technology.

Holmes settled the case, but Balwani was still dealing with it in 2022. Balwani said he didn’t do what he was accused of. It was a classic case of fraud. He wanted out of the case and investigators were steadily pulling him in.

On June 15, 2018, after a long investigation, a court charged Sunny Balwani and Elizabeth Holmes with fraud. They accused them of tricking investors and patients.

Balwani and Holmes faced nine counts of wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. In March 2020, the court decided Balwani would have a separate trial from Holmes. In January 2022, Holmes was found guilty.

On July 7, 2022, they found Balwani guilty. He got a 12-year, 11-month prison sentence and had to pay restitution. Balwani appealed, but the court denied him. In April 2023, a court ordered both Holmes and Balwani to pay $452 million to the victims.

Personal Life

As we can see, Sunny married the Japanese artist Keiko Fujimoto. But they got a divorce in 2002. Then he met Elizabeth Holmes when she was 18, and he was 37. Now here is the strange part. Holmes earlier said Sunny used to abuse her a lot. But Sunny claimed it was all false.

Of course, we do not know whom to believe. Elizabeth suddenly dropped all the charges of abuse. When the court asked Sunny about this, he said something else. According to him, he wanted to change Elizabeth for her own good. Even Keiko, his ex-wife, supported him.

Many people gave statements. The court realised most of them were inflammatory and false. The court will decide. Let us see what happens. Something good will come out of it. We are sure of that. But they caught the fraud.

This means a judgment is not far. We will update this section definitely in the time to come. Right now, we think both will get jail terms. At least, fraud has serious consequences in America. We are not entirely sure though. We will let you know what decision they make.
