These eight-legged wonders, all part of the Otoniela genus, were hiding in plain sight across South America. From the lush Amazonian rainforest to a bustling Brazilian power plant, these elusive creatures managed to stay under the radar until researchers took a closer look at archived spider specimens.
Meet Otoniela Lupercioi, one of the newly discovered ghost spiders who made its home in a hydroelectric power plant! As the name suggests, ghost spiders are masters of disguise. They’re lightning-fast, camouflaged to perfection, and prefer the cloak of darkness for their nighttime hunts. During the day, they vanish behind tiny silk sacs, leaving only whispers of their presence.
“They’re very fast,” one of the researchers told the Miami Herald, “and difficult to see.” No wonder they’ve remained hidden for so long!
