Prepare Your Roof for Extreme Weather Conditions

One of the most important aspects of your home is your roof. It is what protects everything inside and keeps out all of the elements. Extreme weather conditions can take a toll on your roof over time, causing damage and leaks. Either of these problems can be costly to repair. However, with proper preparation, you can help protect your roof from the effects of extreme weather.

If you find yourself looking for a roof repair or replacement, find a reputable contractor in your area to help you fix the problem. Below are some things that you can do to help prepare your roof for the elements and hopefully prevent costly repairs.

  • 1. Inspect Your Roof Regularly

  • 3. Trim Overhanging Branches
  • 4. Secure Loose Shingles
  • 5. Ensure Proper Ventilation

1. Inspect Your Roof Regularly

Regular inspections of your roof can help you identify any damage or areas that may be vulnerable to extreme weather. This gives you the chance to spot any areas on your roof that may need special attention. It also will allow you to spot any areas that could become a problem in the future.

You should inspect your roof at least twice a year, in the spring and fall, and after any major storm events. This gives you the opportunity to prevent problems from arising.

2. Keep Your Gutters Clean

Clogged gutters can cause water to back up under your shingles, causing damage and leaks. You should clean your gutters regularly to ensure that water can flow freely away from your roof. If you live in areas that get heavy rain or snow throughout the year, it is crucial for your gutter to be debris free.

As stated, it can cause back up if water is not able to flow freely. This may even cause water to freeze in your gutters during the winter months if it is not able to flow freely when temperatures get above freezing.

3. Trim Overhanging Branches

Overhanging branches can damage your roof during high winds or storms. You should trim any branches that are close to or touching your roof to prevent damage. Even if they are not touching your home at the time, if a serious storm comes through with wind, it can cause the branches to rub up against your roof. With the right amount of force, branches rubbing on your roof can cause damage that will need to be repaired.

4. Secure Loose Shingles

Loose or missing shingles can be easily ripped off during high winds. You should inspect your roof for loose or missing shingles and secure them with roofing cement or replace them if necessary.

You may think that a single missing or loose shingle doesnt make a difference, but if not properly fixed water may be able to get into your home and cause damage to the inside of your home.

5. Ensure Proper Ventilation

Proper ventilation can help prevent ice dams from forming on your roof during the winter months. You should ensure that your attic is properly insulated and ventilated to prevent heat buildup that can cause ice to melt and refreeze on your roof.

If you build or buy a home, be sure that the attic is inspected to ensure that proper ventilation is there so you do not have problems down the road.
