Unexpectedly, Lee Sun Kyun, who was most known for his part in the Academy Award–winning movie “Parasite,” has died in Seoul at the age of 48. The already tragic news is made more confusing by the fact that the actor passed away while a police investigation into possible drug usage is still continuing.
Lee’s death has been confirmed by the Associated Press and Korean media sources. It has come to light that his wife called the police with what appeared to be a suicide note. Later on Wednesday morning, authorities found Lee comatose in his car in a Seoul park.
Lee Sun Kyun had been under scrutiny by local police for the past few months following allegations of drug use. Reports indicate that he was questioned regarding suspicions of marijuana and other illegal substances. In a previous statement, the actor claimed to have been deceived into drug use. His agency, HODU&U Entertainment, stated in October that Lee faced threats and extortion related to the alleged drug use. Notably, he tested negative in drug tests administered by authorities.
Over the weekend, Lee underwent 19 hours of police questioning, further intensifying the pressure on the acclaimed actor. The investigation had already taken a toll on his career, leading to his withdrawal from the K-drama thriller series “No Way Out.”
Lee Sun Kyun, with a career spanning back to 1999, rose to prominence with roles in notable dramas like “Behind the White Tower” and “Coffee Prince.” His global recognition soared with the 2019 movie “Parasite,” directed by Bong Joon Ho. The film made history as the first non-English-language picture to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
The actor’s contributions to “Parasite” and his captivating performances earned him praise from critics worldwide. However, the recent drug probe seemed to cast a shadow over his career, impacting both his personal and professional life.
South Korea, with its strict drug laws, often witnesses intense investigations into alleged drug abuse. Lee’s case follows other high-profile instances, including K-pop star G-Dragon’s recent investigation, which concluded with negative drug test results.
As the industry mourns the loss of a talented actor, questions surrounding the circumstances of Lee Sun Kyun’s death and the impact of the ongoing investigation loom large. The entertainment world is left grappling with the sudden departure of a respected figure whose contributions left an indelible mark.
