The IT world was shocked when Sam Altman was removed from the chair of the CEO of OpenAI. The tech world wondered at the possible reason behind the removal. Presently, a letter has emerged, purportedly crafted by the company’s own researchers, and it may contain some insights.
Before Sam Altman was ousted from his role as CEO of OpenAI, he found himself in discord with Helen Toner, an AI researcher and director on the company’s non-profit board. Altman sought Toner’s removal from the board and enlisted the involvement of other board members in this effort, as reported by The Information.
The tension within the board preceding Altman’s exit might have been a catalyst for his removal. Recent updates indicate that Sam Altman and OpenAI’s board are revisiting talks about his potential return to the organization. According to a report from Bloomberg, discussions are underway between Altman and at least one board member, Adam D’Angelo.
The possibility of Altman resuming a role as a director on a transitional board is being explored. This additional context sheds light on the public dispute that unfolded on Friday, culminating in one of the most significant corporate dramas in recent history. Altman’s removal from the company led to the resignation of four senior employees and triggered four days of disruption within the startup.
A recently surfaced letter, reportedly authored by OpenAI researchers, has raised questions about a powerful artificial intelligence discovery with potentially dire consequences. Reuters reports that the letter, sent to the board of directors just before the recent upheaval that led to four CEO changes in less than five days at OpenAI, warned about a project named Q* (pronounced Q-Star).
The letter, which The Messenger has not been able to review, adds complexity to the disagreements over AI safety at OpenAI. Sources suggest that Q* may signify a step towards artificial general intelligence (AGI), indicating superhuman intelligence. OpenAI has not responded to The Messenger’s request for comment.
