Netflix’s highly anticipated live-action adaptation of “Avatar The Last Airbender” is generating buzz ahead of its February premiere. However, showrunner Albert Kim has revealed a significant change in the series’ timeline, raising questions among fans about the impact on the overall narrative.
Timeline Tweaks
In a surprising revelation, Kim shared with Entertainment Weekly that the live-action series has altered the original show’s timeline. Unlike the animated counterpart, where all three seasons unfold in a single calendar year, the live-action adaptation had to accommodate real-world factors. The decision to remove the timeline’s one-year constraint allows flexibility for potential future seasons, considering the aging of the young cast.
Kim explained, “All three seasons of the animated series essentially take place in the course of one calendar year. There was no way we could do that. So we had to design this first season, especially, to accommodate the possibility of some time elapsing between the first and the second season.”
Sozin’s Comet: A Temporal Omission
One of the most iconic elements in the original series is Sozin’s Comet, a celestial event that occurs every 100 years and grants firebenders unparalleled power. In a significant departure from the source material, the live-action adaptation has chosen to omit the specific timeframe tied to the comet. This decision stems from the practical challenge of predicting the actors’ ages for potential subsequent seasons.
Kim clarified, “The comet was their ticking clock. We removed that particular ticking clock from our show for now because we couldn’t know exactly how old our actors would be for the subsequent seasons.We definitely thought about that going into season 1 so that we can accommodate for puberty, adolescence, time passing — all of those fun things that happen to real-life human beings that don’t happen to animated characters.”
Maintaining Realism and Faithfulness
Despite these changes, Kim intends to maintain a sense of realism within the live-action adaptation. By allowing for potential time lapses between seasons, the show aims to address the natural process of the young cast members growing up. This decision, while a deviation from the original, reflects a thoughtful approach to storytelling and acknowledges the challenges of translating an animated series into a live-action format.
