In a surprising turn of events, Melissa Barrera, known for her roles in the fifth and sixth Scream movies, will not be reprising her role in the seventh installment of the popular slasher franchise. The decision stems from Barrera’s recent social media posts expressing support for the Palestinian cause and criticizing Israeli actions during the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The Scream movie’s production company, Spyglass Media Group, announced Barrera’s exit with a forceful statement rejecting hate speech. They said, “Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”
The company that distributed the Scream films, Paramount Pictures, declined to comment. Christopher Landon, the director of Scream VII, appeared to disassociate himself from the choice, posting on social media, saying, “This is my statement.” Everything is bad. Give up shouting. I did not made the decision to do this.”
The Israel-Hamas conflict has proven to be a contentious issue in Hollywood, with actress Susan Sarandon also facing consequences for her statements. Sarandon was dropped by her talent agency, UTA, following remarks made at a pro-Palestinian rally in New York.
Melissa Barrera played Sam Carpenter in both the 2022 and 2023 Scream films, becoming a central figure in the franchise. Her absence from Scream VII comes as a surprise, considering her significant role and the success of the previous installment, Scream VI, which grossed $108 million domestically and an additional $60 million internationally.
Barrera’s exit raises concerns about how one’s personal convictions and professional activities in the entertainment sector interact. Known for her outspoken comments on Instagram on the Israel-Hamas conflict, the actress has previously called for a ceasefire and referred to Palestine as a “colonized country.” She is currently leaving the Scream franchise as a result of these statements.
As the controversy unfolds, it remains to be seen how these developments will impact both the upcoming Scream installment and Melissa Barrera’s career. The delicate balance between freedom of expression and the responsibilities tied to public personas continues to be a topic of discussion in the entertainment world.
