NFL star Jonathan Owens revealed the surprising beginning of his relationship with gymnastics icon Simone Biles, stating, “I didn’t know who she was at the time.” The couple, who married in April, initially connected on the dating app Raya in 2020.
Owens shared the amusing details on “The Pivot” podcast, hosted by former NFL stars Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor, and Channing Crowder. Owens admitted his lack of knowledge about gymnastics, saying, “I had never really paid attention to gymnastics, so it piqued my curiosity.”
The Green Bay Packers safety, then playing for the Houston Texans, swiped right on Biles, discovering they were a match. However, Owens remained unaware of Biles’ celebrity status. After returning from the gym, he noticed Biles had liked his Instagram posts, prompting him to think, “‘Man, this gotta be fake.’ I didn’t know who she was at the time.”
Despite Owens’ initial hesitation, the couple began texting and met in person a few days later in Houston. Owens humorously admitted, “I was fighting it. I was afraid to commit.” However, their chemistry was undeniable, and Owens remarked, “We hung out, man, it was like we hit it off instantly. You know, we just laughed the whole night.”
When asked if he mentioned not knowing Biles initially, Owens recalled asking her, “Who is your competition?” Biles’ response, “Myself,” left a lasting impression on Owens, who realized Biles was “the real deal.”
The hosts playfully teased Owens about being the “lesser-known athlete” in the relationship. Biles interjected, emphasizing that they matched on the dating app, with her being the first to message. She confidently asserted, “I know what I like and I know what I want.”
As the podcast episode circulated, Owens faced backlash on social media for his comments. Critics expressed disappointment and urged him to offer a sincere apology to Biles.
In response, Owens posted wedding photos on Instagram, captioned, “Unbothered 😂❤️ Just know we locked in over here,” with a fingers-crossed emoji. Biles commented with the same emoji and added, “For life.”
Despite the initial surprise and online reactions, Owens and Biles seem unfazed, embracing their unique love story.
