New York Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s performance, deeming it “unacceptable” after a defeat to the Phoenix Suns. Despite Brunson’s outstanding individual effort with a game-high 35 points in the 116-113 loss, the team fell short against a Phoenix squad lacking key players Bradley Beal (back) and Kevin Durant (foot).
The Suns, led by an impressive display from Devin Booker, secured the victory with a game-winning three-pointer in the final 1.7 seconds. Notably, Brunson had tied the game with a crucial jumper just over 21 seconds before Booker’s decisive shot.
Brunson remarked that it is simple to assert, “No KD, no Beal, one of those nights.” However, he emphasized that the team controls certain aspects, such as their actions. He pointed out that they cannot control the ball going into the hoop or the referees’ calls, but they can influence factors like effort and performance, and the team’s lacklustre display in that regard was deemed unacceptable. He concluded by stating that they need to improve in those controllable areas.
Brunson and his teammates were notably troubled by the Knicks’ deficiencies in rebounding. The Suns outperformed the Knicks on the boards, securing a 47-38 advantage, with a notable 18-13 edge in offensive rebounds, resulting in 20 second-chance points.
The game on Sunday marked another impressive beginning to the week for Brunson, reinforcing the legitimacy of his Eastern Conference Player of the Week nomination. Despite the loss to Phoenix, Brunson showcased his scoring prowess with his third 30-point performance in the last five games, maintaining an impressive 54 per cent shooting accuracy from the field.
The Knicks, with a current record of 9-7, will return to action on Tuesday night as they conclude their In-Season Tournament group play against the Charlotte Hornets at 7:30 p.m. ET on MSG. Brunson has showcased his top-notch performance during Group B play, currently ranking third among scorers in In-Season Tournament games (minimum of 3 games played).
