During a physical altercation with Keith, a container of bleach was spilt on Jeff. This left him vulnerable. Then, grabbing an opportunity, Keith found a lighter and set Jeff on fire. This caused the alcohol and the clothing soaked in bleach to burst into flames. Jeff failed to extinguish the fire on his own. In his vulnerable state, he tumbled down a flight of stairs while he was still wrapped in fire. He lost consciousness and was hospitalized with severe burns. The incident scarred him all over his body.
In the hospital, he was informed that Liu was being released due to new evidence. Liu was imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. The bandages were removed from his body after several weeks of recovery. This revealed the disfigured body of Jeff. The family became very concerned about his reactions. However, Jeff became fond of his altered appearance despite all the traumatic experiences. There was a noticeable change in his behaviour. The doctor mistook it as the consequence of his pain medication.

After the bandages were taken off, his parents were terrified at the sight. For Jeff, he lost his sanity, and the disfigured body and the ghastly pale face appeared beautiful to him. Moreover, he carved a permanent smile on his face that night so that he would not need to smile again. He even turned his eyelids to always see his beautiful face.
