Apple’s recently released iOS 17.3 beta introduces two notable features: a significant update to device security, and the anticipated return of collaborative playlists for Apple Music. While an official release date remains unconfirmed, January or February of 2024 appear most likely, with compatibility extending to iPhone XS and later models.
Strengthening User Defenses:
The headline addition is undoubtedly Stolen Device Protection, a robust feature aimed at mitigating the potential damage caused by phone theft. Recognizing the vulnerability exposed by thieves acquiring passcodes in public settings, Apple is implementing mandatory biometric authentication (Face ID or Touch ID) for a range of sensitive actions. These include accessing passwords stored in iCloud Keychain, applying for additional Apple Cards, and erasing all device content and settings. Notably, no passcode fallback exists for these actions, reinforcing the reliance on biometric verification.
For particularly critical actions, such as altering the Apple ID password associated with the device, Stolen Device Protection adds a time-based layer of security. Upon successful biometric authentication, users must wait one hour before completing the action, with an additional biometric verification required. This deliberate delay incentivizes careful consideration and discourages hasty alterations under duress. Apple clarifies that this delay will not be enforced in familiar locations, such as the user’s home or workplace.
Stolen Device Protection can be readily activated within the Settings app under Face ID & Passcode, offering an opt-in security enhancement for iPhone XS and later models. Newer iPhones benefit from additional functionalities within this feature.
Rekindling Collaborative Creativity:
Apple Music subscribers rejoice! Collaborative Playlists, initially slated for iOS 17.2 but subsequently pulled, are making a triumphant return in iOS 17.3. This eagerly awaited feature empowers multiple users to co-create playlists, adding, removing, and reordering songs in real-time.
This collaborative approach fosters shared musical experiences, ideal for crafting the perfect party playlist with friends or building thematic playlists within groups. While the feature won’t be officially available until 2024, its inclusion in the beta hints at an imminent launch, much to the delight of Apple Music enthusiasts.
The iOS 17.3 beta offers a glimpse into Apple’s vision for the future of mobile software. Enhanced security measures prioritize user well-being, while the return of collaborative playlists rekindles creative collaboration within the Apple Music ecosystem. As the beta testing process unfolds, further insights into these features and potential additions are sure to emerge.
