If you ever get punished for doing something illegal, what will you do? Probably, you only have two options left after that. First is to learn from your mistakes and not walk on the same road again.
And second, to upgrade yourself, and do something that is even more dangerous and do everything to escape from the law. The second path is the one that was chosen by the notorious drug dealer Boston George Jung.
He was one of those amazing, influential, and charismatic drug dealers in America whom others couldn’t par with. George was also pro at cheating near death and lawful punishments. He is the one who helped Pablo Escobar to become the strongest and wealthiest drug lord of the time.
George was the one who had the lead position in Pablo’s Medellin Cartel. Moreover, he single-handedly took care of smuggling almost 80 percent of the cocaine smuggled in the United States at his time.
Boston George’s Entry Into This World
George Jung was born in Boston, Massachusetts on 6 August 1942. Though a talent in football, he never liked academics much. He, himself described that he “screwed up” the most in academics. He first came across Marijuana while in college.
At that time cannabis was the biggest player in the market and quite popular. Then George moved to Manhattan Beach in California. And, Manhattan was where George entangled himself in the world of drugs.
At first, it was all about the fun of smoking weed, and sometimes Goerge sold some of his stash to his friends. Things took a life-changing turn when one of Goerge’s friends came to see him in California from Massachusetts.
From him, George learned about the price difference of marijuana from his place to the East. The difference was over $200 and this fueled a brewing idea in Jung’s mind.
George Jung’s Master Plan
He thought of a business plan where he would get marijuana locally and then fly to Amherst, Massachusetts to sell it. After a while, this marijuana smuggling upgraded from a side gig to his serious source of income.
Soon George figured out that if he wants more out of this, he needs to cut the middle man from the picture and connect with the dealer himself.
He started to look for the source of the Mexican cartel to get his pot. George and his co-smugglers traveled all the way to Puerto Vallarta and even after searching for weeks, they failed to connect with any local dealer.
However, on their last day there, they met an American girl who led them to get a kilo of marijuana for just $20. During his flight back with the pot, he flew himself from Point Damia to the dried lake beds of Palm Springs, California.
After an incident of going off course with the plane on the way, George decided to hire professionals for the job next time. Even though the transport did include a lot of time and risks being a lucrative business, it was all worth it for these guys. George and his friends made between $50,000 to $100,000 per month in this way.
George Jung: Turning Imprisonment Into an Opportunity
Boston George’s luck may have run out and he was arrested with over 600 pounds of marijuana in 1974. Turned out that a heroine smuggler who was going to receive George’s stuff got caught and ratted him out too. But somehow, being in jail opened several other doors for George to flourish in his smuggling journey.
In there, he met a Colombian named Carlos Lehder. He was into carjacking and had contacts with cocaine suppliers. For now, Lehder was looking for ways to smuggle his Colombian cocaine into the US.
It seemed like a match made in heaven and destined to meet. Because they fit so perfectly. Lehder was looking for transportation and George was a pro in that by this time. And they met a few months later of their release. That’s where George’s cocaine smuggling journey started and he did flourish in that too.
George Got Into Pablo Escobar’s Empire of Cocaine
Being the “El Americano” for the Colombians who made smuggling much more easy in terms of transport, he marked the beginning of the Medellin Cartel.
Jung’s connections and planes made smuggling via aircraft smoother than ever and they were making millions in a matter of days. In the 1970s, about 80 percent of the total cocaine that was in the US was because of Boston Geoge Jung.
Lehder slowly pulled out his partnership with George when he thought that he didn’t need help in the US anymore. But for George, it was an opportunity to get closer to Pablo Escobar.
According to Jung, it was a crazy experience to work with Pablo as a partner. He witnessed multiple executions and man-made accidents while working with Pablo. And. he knew that now, he could never turn back from this.
The Downfall of George Jung
In 1988, George was arrested due to the amount of cocaine the police got from his lavish home. Before that, he was sitting on a pile of money, paying minimal taxes, and being a celebrity with women all over him. He did try to flee while on bail with his wife and daughter but was busted again.
However, he was offered a deal by the cops. If he testified against Lehder, he would be waived off. But George knew that Lehder was Pablo’s partner, and this fact scared him and he refused to testify. But later, the odds were in his favor and Lehder fell out of Pablo’s good graces. Pablo approached George and probed him to testify against Lehder, so he did.
Though George got a release after testifying but now at this point, smuggling was all he knew. So he joined hands with a friend to smuggle but got busted as his “friend” worked for EDA. This time he went to prison in 1997.
George Jung Being Blow’s Inspiration
When in jail, George was approached by a director in Hollywood for a movie production about his life. He agreed, leading him to become a star in Boston. The movie was named “Blow” and Johnny Depp played Boston George Jung.
George was released from jail in 2014 but went in again in 2016 due to his parole violation. His ultimate freedom from the prison cell was in 2017 after which he led a life being a free man and he had absolutely no regrets. He died in the May of 2021 due to a kidney and liver failure.
