Early Life

Atmore, Alabama, was the place of Evander Holyfield’s birth on October 19, 1962. Of nine kids, he was the youngest. He was raised in the violent Bowen Homes Housing Projects after the family moved to Atlanta, Georgia.

He only started boxing at age seven, and he took first place in the Boys Club Boxing Tournament. Fighting in the Heavyweight, Cruiserweight, and Light-Heavyweight Divisions, Holyfield proved himself in the sport.

At age 13, Young Holyfield was eligible to compete in his first junior Olympics. He won the regional competition and the Best Boxer title by the time he was 15 years old, making him the Southeastern Regional Champion. At the 1983 Pan American Games in Caracas, Venezuela, Holyfield represented the United States. He obtained the silver medal and qualified for his first Olympics.
