It’s already approaching two years since Cruel Summer Season 1 premiered. So that is too long a period without this underrated gem. The first season of the Freeform thriller was a wild ride that shocked us with twists and turns and lulled us into the lives of two unreliable narrators. Cruel Summer is returning for a second season. Although the new instalment will feature a completely new cast. So, we can expect some of the same gripping storytelling.
Cruel Summer Season 2 features three timelines around Y2K. Also, the central mystery follows Sadie Stanley’s Megan Landry, Lexi Underwood’s Isabella LaRue, and Griffin Gluck’s Luke Chambers.
While the story of Kate and Jeanette has concluded, Season 2 of Cruel Summer. It will share its themes of friendship, loyalty, and betrayal. “So many people love those characters, but we could not maintain the integrity without repeating the same thing,”. Executive Producer Jessica Biel said at the winter press tour. Biel also shared what draws her to crime stories focused on female characters. “What stands out is always unreliable narrators,” she said. Cruel Summer Season 2 is bound to prompt viewers to question every word that comes out of the characters’ mouths.
What is Cruel Summer Season 2 about?
It wouldn’t be Cruel Summer if it didn’t involve an intense teenage friendship. Set in a waterfront town in the Pacific Northwest at the turn of the millennium. Season 2 will once again jump around to different points in the characters’ lives. Freeform’s official description, per Deadline, reads, “Approaching the story from three different timelines surrounding Y2K. The season twists and turns as it tracks the early friendship between Megan, Isabella and Megan’s best friend Luke. The love triangle that blossomed, and the mystery that would impact all of their lives going forward.”
Who is in the Cruel Summer season 2 cast?
In April 2022, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Cruel Summer is now officially an anthology series.
The new cast for Cruel Summer season 2 includes Sadie Stanley, Griffin Gluck, KaDee Strickland, Lisa Yamada, and Sean Blakemore. On April 27, 2022, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Lexi Underwood has been tapped to replace Eloise Payet in the role of Isabella.
The Hollywood Reporter also revealed the season 2 characters and their storylines. Sadie Stanley plays Megan Landry, a computer coder and honour student from a blue-collar family. Griffin Gluck takes on the role of Megan’s lifelong best friend, Luke Chambers, who hails from a prominent family.
However, KaDee Strickland as Debbie, Megan’s hard-working single mom, is in the cast. Lisa Yamada portrays Parker, a popular musician who becomes more cynical as the world takes a dark turn around her. Sean Blakemore will play the sheriff of the small Pacific Northwest town where the second season takes place.
Cruel Summer season 2 release date
The Cruel Summer season 2 release date kicks off on June 5, 2023, with a two-episode premiere.
Initially, season 2 was due to arrive in 2022. Also, that didn’t happen. We now know season 2 will arrive, fittingly, for summer 2023.
Freeform president Tara Duncan revealed Cruel Summer is coming with season 2. It was before the first season’s finale back in June 2021. Filming commenced for season 2 in April 2022 and they completed it on September 7, 2022.
