Irish mystery drama Clean Sweep, starring Charlene McKenna of Monaghan, premiered on RTE on Sunday night. McKenna plays a serial killer who has spent the previous two decades passing herself off as a family woman.
Since RTE’s massively popular crime series Kin ended its spectacular second season last weekend, anticipation for the six-part series was at an all-time high.
Clean Sweep Wiki
The show is a family crime drama presented from the perspective of a serial killer (McKenna) who has spent the better part of two decades inconspicuously passing as a housewife, mother, and stay-at-home breadwinner.
Based on a true incident, the show follows a Garda investigator (Barry Ward of The Fall) as he investigates a murder in Ireland’s west, only to discover that the real killer is his wife.
This six-part family crime series is recounted from the perspective of Shelly Mohan, a wife, mother, homemaker, and killer hidden in plain sight, according to the official RTE synopsis.
Her days consist of cooking, cleaning, shopping, and chauffeuring her three children (Rhys Mannion, Katelyn Rose Downey, and Aidan McCann) to and from school and extracurricular activities, as well as volunteering on the PTA with fellow stay-at-home parent Matt (Trevor Kaneswaren) and still getting a home-cooked meal on the table for her garda detective husband Jason (Barry Ward) when he gets home every night.
Clean Sweep Ending Explained
Shelley Mohan is your ordinary stay-at-home mum; she and her three children live in an unnamed Irish city where her detective husband, Jason, works. Shelley spends the day with her three children, Derek, Caitlin, and Niall, while Jason is usually absent due to work. Shelley’s daily routine consists of waking up to Jason departing for work and then going about her day as usual.
The mother starts the day by getting the kids ready for school, and then she watches Niall go on the bus and drives Caitlin to her classroom. However, the woman has no idea that a man has been following her for days, watching her from a parked automobile.
Like clockwork, the man is spotted following Shelley throughout the supermarket each time she visits. Shelley is horrified when the man approaches her outside just as she is getting into her car to go.
For some reason, Charlie keeps calling Shelley “Maggie,” and it’s clear that they were once close friends. Since Shelley and her husband are very well-known in the neighbourhood, her fear that someone might see them reveals that she has never informed anybody about her background. Shelley, who can’t seem to get away from Charlie, agrees to meet him at the hotel where he is staying later that day.
The encounter left her quite upset, but she also seems unable to avoid Charlie. After finishing the housework, Shelley drives to the hotel, and she even brings one of Jason’s service handguns with her, although it normally resides in a safe in their bedroom.
Meeting with Charlie does not go as Shelley expected or planned, as the man begins discussing their history together. Charlie, who has found solace in religion, insists that they abandon their filthy ways and start over while revealing that he has spent years searching for Shelley.
Charlie tells Shelley that Jason has been having an extramarital affair, and he even starts to dial the man’s number to confront him, but Shelley is unconvinced since she wants to keep her past buried forever. Shelley is stunned and wants to stop Charlie desperately, but she sees no option except to take drastic action.
The woman pulls out a revolver she’d been concealing and fatally killed Charlie. She also takes the man’s phone and learns he is communicating with someone who told Charlie to look for Shelley. Shelley throws the phone into the water and returns home to conceal her history.
