In a heartbreaking incident on Friday morning, Marion County High School faced a devastating loss as senior student and athlete Bentley Buchanan lost her life in a car crash on Highway 72 in Jasper. Bentley, a cherished member of the basketball and volleyball teams, leaves behind a grieving school community.
The impact of this tragedy reverberated through the cancellation of the Friday night basketball game, with the Mid Winter Dance also facing a delay. School officials expressed their sorrow, stating, “We are devastated to announce the passing of one of our seniors, Bentley Buchanan, this morning. She was a member of our volleyball team and basketball team, but most importantly, our Warrior family.”
To support those affected, the school opened its gym from 4-6 pm CST, providing a space for students and the community to gather, grieve, and find solace. Counselors, school officials, and ministers were available to offer support during this challenging time.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Department issued a notification urging the public to avoid Hwy 72 due to the crash, emphasizing the road closure from I24 Kimball to Hwy. 156 in South Pittsburg.
