Asian Cricket Council ( ACC) in a recent meeting decided to shift Asia Cup 2023 out of Pakistan as Team India is unwilling to travel to Pakistan due to diplomatic tensions between the two nations. BCCI Secretary earlier in the year in a statement said that India will not be part of the 2023 Asia Cup if the tournament is scheduled in Pakistan.
Asia Cricket Council members decided that they will announce alternate venue for Asia Cup 2023 scheduled in September. In a recent statement ” The ACC Had a constructive dialogue on the upcoming Asia Cup 2023. The Board agreed to continue discussions on operations, timelines and any other specifications with a view to ensure the success of the tournament. An update on the matter would be taken at the next ACC executive board meeting in March 2023″ said ACC officials.
A senior BCCI official in a statement confirmed as per sources the tournament is unlikely to be held in Pakistan. The official further added ” With India deciding against travelling to Pakistan, the tournament will have to be shifted. A tournament without Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill will have the sponsors back out.”
Pakistan as a nation is going through one of the worst economic crisis in the nations history. The inflation in Pakistan has reached a all tie high in Pakistan. One USD is now equal to 277 Pakistani Rupee and organizing a high profile tournament like Asia Cup is a big task with investors and sponsors backing out of the tournament.
UAE is the likely nation to host yet another Asia Cup later this year. Srilanka despite being the hosts for Asia Cup 2022, the tournament was held in UAE due to the economic crisis in Srilanka. The same situation once again arises as Pakistan is going through one of the worst economic crisis and the security of players is one of the biggest concerns for ACC and UAE could be the frontrunners to host Asia Cup 2023.
ACC members also discussed on the Annual Budget and revenue. As per latest reports the Annual budget allocated for Afghanistan Cricket board has been increased from six percent to fifteen percent. ACC in its meeting also promised of developing women’s cricket in Afghanistan. After Taliban’s take over in Afghanistan Women are banned from playing sports. The Board members also approved for the inclusion of Japan and Indonesia to be part of the qualifying tournament for Asia Cup 2023 held in September.
