We all know how domestic automakers have a monopoly over the full-size pickup truck segments. However, this year the 2022 Toyota Tundra has appealed to a segment of unique audience. Most of the cars under the belt were quite sturdy, antiquated, and had leaf-spring rear suspension.
The Tundra features coil springs out back that enable it to ride and drive much better than most cars. Furthermore, it can tow up to 12,00 pounds. And to add benefits to that, it comes standard with a suite of driver assists.
Unlike its domestic rivals, the Tundra has not been available with V-8. However, the lone engine option is a twin-turbo that has V-6. It is available with a hybrid system that is good for 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque.
With such a cabin space that many take to be pretty, it also offers a 14.0-inch touchscreen. Unlike how the previous models used to be, this 2022 Toyota Tundra sure is an upgrade. However, there are more than one reasons why many have started preferring the 2022 Tundra.
Upgrade on 2022 Toyota Tundra:
Toyota has given the Tundra a much-needed makeover. This redesign that takes after the previous generation has gone unchanged since 2007. However, after almost 15 years, it found a change. Although one may say that it is a refreshed model for 2015, it struggled to steal the sale. Ford F-150 took the credit compared to the new Toyota Tundra.
Mind that the new tundra will not outsell any of its counterparts. However, the improvements added to the car will make it a worthy competitor in the market. The added benefits make it desirable even. The new car features 22-inch wheels, flashy chrome, and a full suite of fancy features.
The 2022 Toyota Tundra has a higher starting price than any of its in-house rivals. Moreover, the entry-level SR trim has more standard features than this. The SR trim contains a 379-hp twin-turbo V-6 and rear suspension with coil spring. Moreover, the one to get is the SR5 with the rare off-road package. as it turns out, it brings an electronic locking rear, unique wheels, new types of suspensions, and other additions.
Let’s Talk About Engine, Transmission, And Performance:
The 2022 Tundra is only a full-size pickup truck. It does not have a V-8 engine. However, instead of that, it only offers a twin-turbo V-6 and a 10-speed automatic transmission. Normally the engine here comes in three different potencies.
On the base of the ST trim, the non-hybrid engine has developed 345 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. Apart from that, it makes 389 horses and 479 pound-feet. At our test track, the non-hybrid limited test truck will deliver a 6.1 second 0-60mph time. The hybrid version will have an electric motor. This motor will be with the transmission as it will allow pure electric driving at low speeds.
This is very different from the ones that already existed. The previous model used a leaf-spring setup. The Tundra however now uses a more refined coil-spring rear suspension. What it does is improves the ride. Moreover, it adds something to the handling characteristics.
To top it off, Toyota continues to popular TRD off-road and TRD sports packages. The former will include an off-road suspension, skid plates, and unique wheels. However, the latter will have lowered suspension and 20-inch wheels. Furthermore, the Tundra can tow up to 12,000 pounds. It is slightly lower than the other full-size trucks. Moreover, it has a maximum payload capacity of 1940 pounds.
A Bit on Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG:
With the non-hybrid powertrain, the two-wheel-drive Tundra will have a rate up to 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. All-wheel drive will reduce those figures by at least nu 1 mpg each. The hybrid model will have a rate of up to 20 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. Take the 75-mph highway route as it is an extensive testing regimen. You can be assured that the hybrid model will have 19 mpg.
What About The Interior, Comfort, And Cargo?
Inside, the 2022 Toyota Tundra is a bit out of fashion. One has to know that it comes with a chunky dashboard. The dashboard will have dots with prominent air vents and a thick, smooth center section. These sections will connect the door panels. The materials that the manufacturing company has used on the center console, as well as the dash, and doors are top-notch. In other words, the materials they used for this model are better than the previous domestic models.
As a result, the quality of the car has increased multiple folds. Moreover, the quality has also increased with the trim levels with the top-of-the-line 1794 Edition sporting attractive wood accents. All models will have a simple yet flexible center console. As a result, it will have more storage than you can imagine.
It will also have a huge center bin. A pair of analog gauges and a small driver information display will be the standard instrument panel. The car will also come with the top trim levels and have a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. If you are worried about the style of the cargo bed, then know that it comes in two body styles with three different cargo bed lengths. They are as follows,
- The extended cab, also known to us as Double Cab, will have either a 6.5- or 8.1-footbed.
- The crew cab, also known as CrewMax, will have either a 5.5- or 6.5-footbed.
Driver Assistance And The Safety Features
Every Tundra always comes with full driver assistance technology that includes automatic high beams, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring system, and more.
