The plot of A Friend of the Family revolves around Robert Berchtold, who was sexually harassed and kidnapped by Jan Broberg. The story is said to be from the 1970s and is based on true events.
The series was created by Nick Antosca, who took inspiration from Netflix’s Abducted in Plain Sight to create A Friend of the Family. He found Abducted in the Plain Sight to have portrayed the story in a brief sense, and therefore, Antosca wanted to make an elaborate, in-depth version of the series.
