The world mourns the loss of André Braugher, a seasoned actor celebrated for his roles in iconic shows like ‘Homicide: Life on the Street’ and ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine.’ His representative confirmed the passing of the 61-year-old actor, who succumbed to an illness on Monday.
Renowned for his portrayal of Det. Frank Pemberton in ‘Homicide,’ Braugher clinched his first Emmy win in 1998. He continued to captivate audiences as the no-nonsense Capt. Raymond Holt in the comedic hit ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine,’ earning four Emmy nominations. Throughout his illustrious career, Braugher received 11 Emmy nominations, securing a second win for his role in the 2006 miniseries ‘Thief.’
Amid the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement, Braugher reflected on his portrayals of law enforcement officers and the societal impact of cop-centered narratives in shows. Speaking candidly to Variety, he remarked on the pervasive influence of such storytelling, acknowledging his own immersion in its mythology.
“It’s almost like the air you breathe or the water that you swim in. It’s hard to see. But because there are so many cop shows on television, that’s where the public gets its information about the state of policing,” Braugher emphasized, highlighting the potential repercussions of such portrayals.
Colleagues and co-stars paid heartfelt tributes following the news of Braugher’s passing. Terry Crews, his co-star on ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine,’ expressed disbelief and gratitude for the time they shared, describing Braugher’s impact as immeasurable.
Away from the screen, Braugher was a mentor and inspiration to many, including Nyambi Nyambi, his co-star on ‘The Good Fight.’ Nyambi fondly recalled the lessons learned from Braugher about acting, storytelling, and the essence of a scene, honoring the late actor’s incredible talent and professionalism.
Beyond his acting prowess, Braugher’s legacy extends to his family. Survived by his wife Ami Brabson and their children, John Wesley Braugher, Michael Braugher, and Isaiah Braugher, his influence will live on in both his artistic contributions and the lives he touched.
As the world mourns the loss of this extraordinary talent, André Braugher’s impact on the entertainment industry and his invaluable insights into societal narratives will be cherished and remembered for years to come.
