Early Life
Despite having spent some of her early years in Compton, California, Serena Jameka Williams was born on September 26, 1981, in Saginaw, Michigan. She and her sister, Venus Williams, were introduced to tennis when they were very young. To have most of the time available for practice, both girls were homeschooled. Her parents, Oracene Price and Richard Williams served as her official coaches.
Richard Williams, who later founded The Venus and Serena Williams Tennis/Tutorial Academy, was one of her early coaches who taught her the game. Serena went to West Palm Beach, Florida with her family when she was nine years old so that she could enrol in Rick Macci’s tennis school. When the daughters were still attending Macci’s academy in 1995, their father took them out and restored his position as their official coach.
Serena Williams Assets
In 2017, Serena Williams paid $6.2 million for a Beverly Hills property. She also owns a residence in Paris with an eye-catching view of the Eiffel Tower. Further, she paid $2.4 million for a house in Palm Beach Gardens, South Florida, in 2015. She and her sister Venus also used to live together in a Palm Beach Gardens mansion they purchased in 1998 for more than $600,000 and later listed for sale 20 years later for $2.5 million.
Serena ultimately sold her $6.62 million Bel-Air property in 2019 after purchasing it in 2006. Before the house was finally sold for $8.1 million two years after she first listed it for sale at $12 million, she had to drop the price twice.
Serena Williams Career
Serena Williams achieved the top position in the world rankings eight times and earned the most prize money of any female tennis player in history. Williams’ career winnings were almost $94 million. She won 14 doubles victories with her sister Venus Williams and won 23 Grand Slam singles titles. She also won Olympic gold medals in Sydney, Beijing, and London.
Williams, when 14 years old, participated in her first professional match in 1995. Williams, who was ranked No. 304, made quite a mark at the 1997 Ameritech Cup by surprising the Nos. 7 and 4, but was beaten in the semifinals. Her career was boosted by the victories, and she finished 1997 in the No. 99 position. Many people questioned if she would ever return to the sport as a result of the surgeries she underwent to fix this.
Her first-ever women’s single gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games, however, came the year after she once more won significant tournaments. Her winning streak continued with victories in the US Open in 2012, the French, Australian, and US Opens in 2013, Wimbledon that same year, Wimbledon in 2014 and 2015, and the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2016. Losses at the US Open and Wimbledon in back-to-back years made 2018 challenging for Serena.
