Grimes has changed the name of her daughter with Elon Musk to a symbol. Although she says the government won’t officially acknowledge it. The singer said 15-month-old Exa Dark Sideræl’s name has been shortened.
“She’s Y now, or “Why?” or just “?” (But the government won’t recognize that). curiosity, the eternal question, .. and such,” Grimes wrote on Twitter on Thursday.
Grimes made the revelation after sharing a rare photograph of the child in a red onesie with green hair alongside an image of herself in a matching get-up.
She said that she and Musk typically do not share images of their daughter to protect her privacy. She posted this image as the child looked “fairly unrecognisable” in it.
The pair’s daughter was born via surrogate in December 2021. That Grimes accidentally revealed in a Vanity Fair profile after the writer heard the baby’s cries in the background.
Grimes and Musk are no strangers to controversy over their children’s names. Their first son was born in 2020, his initial name was X Æ A-12. Also, later they changed it to X Æ A-Xii. California law forbids the use of numbers in a legal name.
The child goes by the nickname X.
What does ‘Exa Dark Sideræl Musk’ mean?
“Exa is a reference to the supercomputing term exaFLOPS (the ability to perform one quintillion floating-point operations per second),” Vanity Fair reporter Devin Gordon explained. Dark is “the unknown. People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe,” Grimes told the outlet.
She later texted Gordon a voice memo with the pronunciation of Sideræl – “sigh-deer-ee-el” – both a nod to her favourite “Lord of the Rings” character, Galadriel and described it as “a more elven” spelling of sidereal, “the true time of the universe, star time, deep space-time, not our relative earth time.”

Grimes explained the single-letter moniker in a tweet on Thursday. “She’s Y now, or ‘Why?’ or just ‘?’ (But the government won’t recognize that),” she wrote.
The name of the child represents “curiosity, the eternal question, .. and such,” she added.
When Grimes initially shared the couple’s daughter’s name in December. She revealed that she and Musk also call their daughter Sailor Mars. A nod to the “Sailor Moon” manga series. Exa Dark Sideræl was a compromise for the parents.
