Euro qualifier 2024: England kick off their Euro qualifier campaign with a dramatic 2-1 win over Italy at Naples. England’s Harry Kane surpasses Wayne Rooney to become England’s all-time leading goal scorer.
On a night where records tumbled as England win their first game in Italy since 1961 in a classic game of two halves. The Three lions grab all important three points to start their Euro 2024 qualification campaign. With the win England top the group c. Their next match is on March 26th against Ukraine.
England’s forward Harry Kane set new goal scoring record as he scores his 54th goal for England. The record was formerly held by Wayne Rooney. Rooney scored 53 goals in his career representing the three lions.
England vs Italy UEFA Euro Qualifiers Game Highlights
England were aggressive in their approach attacking and faltering the defensive attack of Italy. Declan Rice scored the first goal of the game in the 13th minute. England gets a corner shot and the resultant corner is played into the back post and Harry Kane takes a shot. It rebounds off a defender and Declan Rice is there to thump it in as England go 1-0 early in the game.
At the stroke of halftime England gets another corner shot. Bukayo Saka smashes it as Harry Kane tries to a header shot. The ball comes of the hand of Italy’s defender and the referee awards a penalty kick to England. Harry Kane calmly scores the goal to become England’s all time leading goal scorer (54).
England were cruising at halftime with a 2-0 lead. They lost their momentum at the start of 2nd half as Italy strike back in the 58th minute. Pellegrini gets the ball at the edge of the box and he feeds Retegui with a reverse pass, who then takes a touch before slotting it past Pickford. Italy fail to score another goal as they hand England the win.
Wayne Rooney reacts on Harry Kane’s record breaking goals
Rooney tweeted: “Congratulations to @HKane on becoming @England ‘s all-time leading goal scorer. I knew it wouldn’t take long but that was quick. Great man, unbelievable goal scorer and an England legend. Congrats Harry.”
Speaking after the game Harry Kane said:
“Big thanks. Obviously I was on the pitch when Wayne broke the record and I know what it meant to him, was so proud of him. Just a great England legend so to hear that is fantastic.
“It means everything,” Harry Kane added. “I was so excited to put the England shirt back on and get back out here, start the campaign for the Euros next year and it had to be a penalty, of course.
